A Friar’s Notes
“May the Choirs of Angels”

Fr. David Convertino, OFM
Executive Director of Development

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

One of my favorite hymns is sung at funeral Masses and I believe it has comforted many grieving hearts: Ernest Sands’ “May the Choirs of Angels.” Its simple, tender, and comforting melody reminds us that love is stronger than death and that our life’s journey always leads home to God.

“May the choirs of angels come to greet you.
May they speed you to paradise.”

I find it very comforting to picture God’s angels—signs of His unending care—surrounding our loved ones and guiding them toward the light. Franciscans see angels not as distant spirits, but as companions on the road, reminding us that no one ever walks alone.

“May the Lord enfold you in His mercy.”

St. Francis says God is “goodness, all goodness, you are the highest Good.” In that goodness, we find mercy and forgiveness. Our failures, fears, and regrets dissolve in the warmth of God’s unconditional love, where every wound is healed and every tear is wiped away.

“May you find eternal life.”
Heaven, for us, is a big family reunion— uniting with God and with all those we have loved. It is the family of faith gathered forever, where joy and love have no end.

At every Mass, we experience a glimpse of that Communion of Saints. The veil between heaven and earth grows thin as we pray beside all who have gone before us.

“Don’t be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends.”  ― Richard Bach

And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will comfort you with the peace of Christ Jesus.
