Congrats to the Franciscan Class of 2026!

Congratulations to this year’s graduates!

June is often the month for graduations, featuring commencement speakers who wax lyrically about the value of education. For those who have earned their diplomas, and their families, it is a time for well-earned celebrations.

Those who experience the value of Franciscan education have special reasons to celebrate.

Franciscans are popularly known for the kind of informal charism we see in the life of St. Francis, who gathered together followers, roamed the countryside and preached about finding God in the beauty of Creation.

But those who follow Francis have also made their mark on the formal structure of the classroom. Early teachers such as Saint Bonaventure and John Duns Scotus helped shape the study of theology, while Roger Bacon contributed to science. Their legacy continues through the work of Franciscan teachers and scholars today.

In the process of engaging study, Franciscans developed a set of values about education.

Statements on Franciscan education abound. One comprehensive view is offered by Siena University, the Franciscan institution in Loudonville, New York.

Siena describes Franciscan education as rooted in:

  • A sacramental view of the world, where all of reality is holy
  • An optimistic view of the human person, holding to the conviction “that men and women are fundamentally good”
  • An emphasis on community
  • A balance between faith and reason, that they “are not enemies, but allies”
  • A concern for social justice, including honoring the dignity of work and the stewardship of Creation
  • A conviction that is open to the contributions of others, whether Catholic or not

The Siena statement of values notes that these principles “are not a set of abstract values and ideas” but serve as a model of living, learning and working together, shaping the community of scholars both inside and outside the classroom.

This year’s graduates of Franciscan institutions experienced a living tradition which transforms lives. They are ready to embark on a mission to spread what they have learned. Congratulations!

Giving to the Franciscans allows you to partake in their special ministry of teaching, whether that be in high schools, colleges or missions. Friars devote themselves to educating students and parishioners to see Jesus in the poor. A Planned Giving donation assists Franciscan ministry and can be part of your overall financial and estate planning.
